A client of mine, widowed after forty years of marriage, asked me last month if it was “too soon” or “too late” to start dating again. My answer: neither. There’s no clock on this. But the dating world she’s stepping back into looks nothing like the one she left, and it’s worth understanding before you jump in.
The New Rule Is L.T.R.M.
Dating over 60 in 2026 has its own shorthand: L.T.R.M., Long-Term Relationship, Marriage-Free. It means real commitment without the paperwork, finances, or wedding. Singles ages 50 to 70 now dominate the dating landscape, with a 23 percent spike in adults 50 to 70 joining online dating since 2022, according to relationship expert data compiled by Sixty and Me. Nobody’s rushing back to the altar. A lot of people are simply done being alone, without being done with independence.
You’re Not Behind. You’re the Trend.
About 36 percent of adults 65 and older report being single, a rate exceeded only by adults 18 to 29, and women 65 and older are nearly twice as likely to be single as men. That’s not a sign something went wrong. A lot of that group isn’t actively hunting for a committed relationship, and plenty are content living solo. If you’re dating again after loss or divorce, you’re not late to the party. You might be early to the trend.
When people do look, they’re not defaulting to the apps their grandkids use. 62 percent of survey respondents said they prefer dating platforms designed specifically for older adults, according to AARP research, citing shared interests, life experience, and clearer relationship goals as the draw. Match, eHarmony, SilverSingles, and OurTime consistently come up as the platforms built for this stage of life rather than borrowed from a younger one.

The Safety Conversation Nobody Skips
Here’s the part I won’t soften. Nearly half, 47 percent, of online daters ages 50 and older encounter someone they believe is trying to scam them, and the FBI’s 2024 Internet Crime Report found adults over 60 suffered the most severe financial losses of any age group, totaling nearly five billion dollars. That’s not a reason to avoid dating. It’s a reason to date with your eyes open.

A few non-negotiables I tell my clients: never send money to someone you haven’t met in person, no matter how good the story is. Video call before you meet, every time. Meet the first few times in public, and tell a friend or family member where you’ll be. If a new match gets serious fast and then asks for help with an “emergency,” that’s not love moving quickly. That’s the scam script.
What This Actually Means for You
You get to write your own rules here. Maybe that’s a companion for dinners and trips with no interest in merging finances or moving in together. Maybe it’s something more traditional. Either is fine. What matters is going in with clear eyes: pick a platform built for your stage of life, take your time, and treat safety steps as normal, not paranoid.
