Featured on PBS Kansas: Using Podcasting to Empower Seniors

Table of Contents

Recently, I had the privilege of being featured on “Empowering Seniors” with America’s Senior Home Coach Katherine Ambrose on PBS Kansas to talk about something that has become deeply personal to me: empowering seniors through education, conversation, and yes, podcasting.

This segment was not about real estate. It was about something bigger.

It was about helping older adults navigate aging with confidence instead of confusion.

Why I Started the Podcast

On the show, I shared how two very different experiences with my parents’ health crises shaped the direction of my work.

One situation involved scrambling.
The other involved better preparation.

The difference between the two was not luck.

It was planning.

Those experiences made something very clear to me: families are often thrown into complex decisions about senior living, medical care, finances, and safety with very little guidance. And when that happens, stress replaces clarity.

That is why I created my podcast, Relax, I Got This! Embracing Life After 60.

Not to add noise.
But to add understanding.

Podcasting as a Tool for Empowerment

What PBS Kansas highlighted so well is that podcasting is not just entertainment. It is education.

It allows seniors and their families to:

  • Hear from experts in healthcare, housing, legal planning, and wellness
  • Learn about options before a crisis
  • Understand senior living choices without pressure
  • Stay informed about scam prevention and fraud protection
  • Explore brain health, longevity, and staying socially engaged

And the best part? It is free. Accessible. Available on a smartphone.

You do not need to be “tech savvy.” You need curiosity and a willingness to stay informed.

That is empowerment.

Aging Is Not About Becoming Passive

One of the most important messages we discussed is this:

Aging does not mean becoming a passive care recipient.

It means staying active in your own decisions.

Too often, seniors are treated as if things just happen to them. But the truth is, when you plan ahead, ask questions, and educate yourself, you remain in control longer.

That might look like:

  • Choosing to modify your home instead of moving
  • Exploring senior living communities before you need one
  • Understanding hospice so it does not feel scary
  • Reviewing finances before health forces quick decisions
  • Decluttering early so your environment supports safety

Technology makes this easier than ever. Through podcasts, YouTube, and digital resources, information is no longer locked behind an office door.

It is in your pocket.

Building a Community of Support

What moved me most about the PBS Kansas feature was the acknowledgment that modern technology can build community, not isolate us.

When someone listens to an episode about scam prevention or getting their Ducks in a Row, they are not alone. They are joining a larger conversation. They are hearing from professionals, caregivers, and other adults walking similar paths.

Personal challenges become shared learning.

Fear becomes preparation.

Confusion becomes clarity.

That is the mission.

Why This Matters Now

We are in the middle of an unprecedented demographic shift. More adults are living longer. Families are more spread out geographically. The “figure it out later” approach simply does not work anymore.

Proactive planning is not pessimistic.
It is powerful.

If this PBS Kansas segment did anything, I hope it showed that education changes outcomes.

And that staying engaged, informed, and connected is one of the strongest forms of independence.
